Situ Studio has collaborated with Drive Change on Snowday, the first food truck to hire and empower formerly incarcerated youth by giving them hands-on work experience in New York City. Snowday is the first of a series of food trucks operated and run by Drive Change. Designed and fabricated by Situ Studio, Snowday's exterior is built from reclaimed Redwood lumber once used in a cooling tower of a coal-burning power plant and Cedar that comprised a greenhouse structure.
The result is a colorful, light weight, 3-dimensional lattice design that renews the former Con-Edison utility vehicle. The cladding system transforms from being very constrained, geometric, and structured on the food service side of the truck to the free, organic, and playful form on the other side; serving both the aesthetic and functional needs of the organization.
